Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that is found in many things, including the environment, and it is also added to some public water supplies. It is often touted as being good for dental health, and while it certainly can be, it is important to understand that fluoride is a poison. In high enough doses, it can be deadly.

That being said, when it comes to dental health, fluoride can help to prevent tooth decay. It does this by making the tooth enamel more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria. Fluoride can also help to reverse early signs of tooth decay.

But, as with anything, too much of a good thing can be bad. When fluoride is ingested in high doses, it can lead to a condition called fluorosis. This is a condition where the teeth become discoloured and mottled. In severe cases, the teeth can become brittle and crumble.

Fluoride is also absorbed into the bones, and in high doses it can lead to bone damage. It is important to note that while fluoride can be beneficial in small doses, it is important not to overdo it.

If you are using fluoride toothpaste, make sure not to swallow it. Spit it out after brushing. And, if you live in an area where the water supply is fluoridated, be sure to check with your dentist to see if you need to use a special fluoride mouthwash or toothpaste.

Fluoride filters can also be used to remove fluoride from water. If you are concerned about fluoride exposure, talk to your dentist or doctor, and be sure to do your own research to make an informed decision about what is best for you and your family.
